Promoting high-quality, evidence-based, and accessible mental health care through leadership, education, and advocacy for those in New Hampshire in need of mental health care as well as those providing mental health care.

All living in our state will have access to mental health care, inclusive of preventative care, that is high-quality, effective, and ethical. Our state will serve as a model for excellent systems of mental health care, including in rural settings.

Goals:

Advocacy: advocating for our patients and our members

-Become a stronger and more influential voice for mental health advocacy in the media, the legislature, and other professional organizations

-Monitor, make recommendations about, and take positions on legislation related to mental health in a meaningful way while focusing our efforts where they are most needed

-Guard against and eliminate policies within the state that discriminate against persons with mental illness and substance use disorders

-Increase participation of NHPS members in advocacy activities such as contacting legislators and advocacy education

Access: ensuring that high-quality and evidence-based mental health care is accessible

-Strive to improve access to care in both the public and the private mental health systems

-Advance principles of integrative/collaborative care in our state

-Insist upon enforcement of mental health parity within the state

Advancement: advancing our profession in our state through leadership, providing a sense of professional community for our members

-Cultivate membership growth and development through recruitment and retention activities

-Create opportunities for trainees and early career psychiatrists to obtain mentorship and develop leadership and advocacy skills

-Foster inclusivity to encourage member involvement and participation regardless of stage of career, geographic location, or type of practice

-Continue to offer CME and other educational opportunities that can support continual practice improvement

Awareness: raising awareness about mental illness and substance use disorders and available treatments and prevention, promoting inclusivity and decreasing stigma

-Increase public mental health awareness and be a prominent voice for external audiences seeking information on issues relevant to mental health care in NH

-Design and implement programs to educate NHPS members and other healthcare professionals on topics relevant to mental health

-Strengthen relationships with other physician specialty groups and professional organizations
